After my Saturday trek of
the Great Wall I lounged and did some research for where to eat that night. I
ended up stumbling upon a brauhaus that was nearby. I was going to venture
there by myself, but Rick texted so I asked if he wanted to come along. After a
short walk I found this glorious gem within Beijing, a German Brauhaus where
everyone was dressed in lederhosen and dirndls. It was so surreal and I was
happy Rick came with me because if I tried to describe this to people no one
would believe me. There was also a "band" playing...err two girls,
one on vocals and one on the keyboard, and it sounded like they were covering
songs from movie soundtracks. I can't make this shit up.
I ordered some brats with
mash and sauerkraut, and I convinced Rick to order spaetzle (my absolute
favorite). Well, I got the brats with mash and sauerkraut. Rick...well, not so
much. What Rick got was not even close to spaetzle. Imagine friend potato
pierogies, but in long noodle form with some beef broth on top, that's what Rick
got. But he gave me some and god, it was good! If this was Top Chef, this
totally would have been a quickfire challenge, "ok chefs, your quickfire
today is to create your favorite German meal, but with a Chinese
influence." Hmm, I should submit that to Padma and Tom for the upcoming
season.
I do have one regret so far for this trip--I wish I packed my dirndl
from Munich (yes I own one). Who would have thought there'd be a place over
here to wear it...
